Read post. In fact, Denis rejects the genre…. Review by Sean Baker So happy I saw this on the big screen and had the opportunity to do so in Vancouver Not exactly the locale I'm used to being in when seeing a Claire Denis film.
I'm sure this will be one of my faves of the year. I felt as helplessly lost as the characters and that's a good thing. My fave Mia Goth performance so far. And the Yorick Le Saux cinematography is a nice blend of film and digital. Arri Alexa scenes in the spaceship Runcam Scope Camera 35 mm in the black hole Super 16 mm scenes on earth.
A highly unusual film, for sure. It was interesting and unique, but I didn't really enjoy it all that much. Except for everything with the baby.High Life - Trailer
I loved the baby stuff yes even when she was screaming. The reluctant but loving father stuff was well performed by Pattinson and endearing in an oddly genuine way.
But it felt too long and too short, was really pretty sound and visually, but had like no conclusions or good storytelling at all. Nothing is followed. Idk torn 3 thumbs sideways watch it I guess. Movies made by auteur directors with a very arthouse sensibility, that happen to be genre movies e.
Essential movies for lonely people out there like me if you want to feel something in this big big world.
High Life. Where to watch Trailer. Director Claire Denis. Guy Lecorne.Monte and his baby daughter are the last survivors of a damned and dangerous mission to deep space. The crew—death-row inmates led by a doctor with sinister motives—has vanished. As the mystery of what happened onboard the ship is unraveled, father and daughter must rely on each other to survive. Challenging, naturalistic and avoiding any mythopoeia or religious parable in its depiction of space travel as alienation, High Life is a grimy, grotesque oddity from a director who's good at that sort of thing.
Pattinson adopts a monkish pose amid depraved sexual experiments, his forcibly delivered child being his only connection to a dwindling humanity. Horrible, beautiful, bleak yet also hopeful all at once.
Denis, in a strange and direct way, explores our shared needs for discovery, purpose and love that all make life bearable. An entirely perfect film. This was the turn for Claire Denis to gift us with this Sci Fy masterpiece. The film really takes you there, beyond the solar system, in a spaceship, next to a black hole. The narrative explains why those people are there, but without resorting to many details.
It leaves you in some sort of blank space, as the universe itself. Sex and violence in outerspace, depicted in a brutal and beautiful way. The one theme - and I mean the whole organizing principle of every relationship, the source of all the profundity people are describing - is the incest taboo. I swear that is not reductive: its a metaphor for your love of your own detritus, for a society that needs its rejects to sustain biopower. Stunning to look at. Binoche's hair-phallus confirms that Denis is a pervert for the ages.
What I think distinguishes Denis' form is its combination of rigour and fluidity. Perhaps the cosmos itself is a kind of ocean. Yes, it is a "flawed" picture. I accept it with its flaws. Rape, terror, and death at the edge of a blackhole. I may be betraying my unfamiliarity with director Claire Denis' body of work, but I can quite easily connect "Trouble Every Day's" interpretation of a 21st century Nosferatu in Vincent Gallo to Juliette Binoche's insemination-obsessed Dr.
Frankenstein in "High Life. Claire Denis delivers another visually stunning and thought provoking film that needs multiple viewings to truly appreciate the greatness of this film. Pattinson delivers another intricate and intense performance and the look of the film feels like Solaris meets Alien.
More proof that Denis is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. For a better experience on MUBI, update your browser. Now Showing Rentals Feed Notebook. They find themselves in the most unimaginable situation after a storm of cosmic rays hit the ship. The movie is weird and confusing with a terrible ending. It feels like whole scenes were cut as certain parts made little sense with bad editing and I even had to read Wikipedia to fill in the gaps at times.
The acting is the strongest point but the set looks cheap, the story is strange and it's as pointless as the mission they are on. Sign In. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. Anne Cohen. Warning: This contains spoilers for High Life. The first thing you should know about High Life is that it is oozing with every kind of bodily fluid. The second thing you should know about High Life is that you will most likely leave without a sense of closure. Instead, the haunting, beautiful film dwells in the dusty cracks we usually avoid. The film almost feels dream-like in that sense: You can remember the overall feeling, and individual parts make perfect sense; but try and explain it to someone else out of order, and it all comes off random and disjointed.
So, before attempting to parse the film's ambiguous ending, here's a little recap of the plot. When we first meet Monte Pattinsonhe and his infant daughter Willow Scarlett Lindsay are the only survivors of a group of death-row inmates sentenced to a dangerous space mission trillions of miles away from Earth. The first sequence deals with him caring for the baby, who we later learn was conceived as part of a sexual experiment run by scientist and de-facto leader, Dr.
Dibs Juliette Binoche. A criminal herself, Dibs was tasked with attempting to create life in the void of space, a task rendered near-impossible because of high radiation levels. Through a series of flashbacks, we get to know the group and their routine before the events leading to their deaths. The clunky, artless ship, despite its small patch of lush, thriving greenery, is a sterile cage. They have no real control over their existence.
So, what does this mean? The most obvious assumption is that the only way out of this predicament is death. Up until reaching the black hole, Monte could still harbor even the faintest hope of rescue, divine intervention, some technological breakthrough — anything that might provide him and his daughter with some means back to Earth. The fact that the two encounter another ship, empty except for dogs animals that hold weighty significance for Monte, as we learn throughout the filmmoments before making their final decision, is no coincidence.Best mastering plugins gearslutz

Susan Gohsmann Set Decoration.High Life is a science fiction horror film directed by Claire Denisin her English-language debut, and written by Denis and her long-time collaborator Jean-Pol Fargeau. Starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binochethe film focuses on a group of criminals who are sent on a mission to travel on a spaceship toward a black hole while taking part in scientific experiments.
A group of criminals serving death sentences are sent on an alternative-energy-finding mission in space to extract energy from a black hole. Each prisoner is treated as a guinea pig by Dr. Dibs, who is fixated on creating a child through artificial insemination, but has yet to find success. Sexual activity between prisoners is prohibited. The ship is equipped with "The Box," a device obsessively used by the crew to masturbate. Dibs murdered her own children and husband before attempting suicide.
Monte, the only celibate prisoner, rejects Dibs' sexual advances. Monte is serving a life sentence for killing his friend for murdering his dog as a child. Monte's only friend on the ship is Tcherny, who is drawn to the onboard garden because it reminds him of Earth.
Pregnant prisoner Elektra delivers a baby, but it dies, and later she does as well. The captain, Chandra, develops leukemia due to radiation and has a stroke before being euthanized by Dibs.
One night, male prisoner Ettore binds a female prisoner named Boyse and her roommate Mink to their beds and attempts to rape Boyse. Nansen, the pilot, intervenes, but Ettore attacks and overpowers her.
Monte arrives, throws Ettore off Boyse, and beats him. When Monte leads Boyse away to be treated, Mink stabs Ettore to death in the hallway.

Dibs begins doubling the amount of sedatives each prisoner receives, later sneaking into Monte's cell and raping him while he is sedated. She then injects his semen into Boyse, who produces a healthy child that Dibs dotes on, but Monte is unaware that he is the baby's father.
As the ship approaches the black hole, Nansen prepares to take a shuttle into it. Unbeknownst to the other prisoners, Boyse kills Nansen with a shovel and takes her place. The shuttle travels through a molecular cloud that alters its trajectory and causes it to dive into the black hole, where Boyse explodes due to spaghettification.Oilserv hassi messaoud
Mink later attacks Dibs and injures her, but is then killed by Monte. Dibs informs Monte that the child is his before ejecting herself into space. Tcherny commits suicide and Monte buries him in the garden according to his wishes. Now the only surviving prisoner, Monte removes the bodies from the ship's morgue, dresses them in spacesuits, and releases them into space.
Monte struggles to raise the baby, whom he has named Willow. He attempts to make repairs to the ship, but her frantic cries through his helmet speakers causes him to drop a tool and lose it in space.
Much later, when Willow has grown into a teenager, they encounter another ship similar to their own. Monte boards the ship, but finds it carrying stray dogs who have survived by eating one another. Willow begs Monte to bring one back, but he refuses, implying contamination could potentially sicken or kill them. The ship moves closer to the black hole, and Willow convinces Monte to board a shuttle with her and journey through it.
Monte takes Willow's hand as a yellow light source grows ever larger and envelops them. Claire Denis had the idea of the project in her mind for fifteen years. Additionally, Laird's wife Zadie Smith contributed to early drafts of the English version of the screenplay.
